The December 28 title is Crooked Hallelujah by Kelli Jo Ford. A member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Ford tells a blistering tale, celebrating three troubled but tough generations of women, all molded and wounded by the Pentecostal culture around them. The sections cover different decades and are told from different perspectives, leading to an electrifying conclusion. The theme of the weather as villain illustrates the unopposable forces Cherokee women must contend with, including the tyranny of society and of men.
