Event Details
Go back in time, before Disney and Universal came to Florida, when hundreds of small roadside attractions gave tourists a chance to see an alligator, have a cold drink, and buy a bag of oranges. Floridians responded to the automobile boom with alligator wrestling, bird shows, and underwater mermaids. Join author and history professor Dr. Jim Clark as he recalls and discusses the days of small motels and quaint attractions.
Jim Clark is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Florida where he has taught history since 1987. He earned a doctorate in Florida history from the University of Florida. He is the author of nine books on Florida history and the editor of a three-volume anthology of Florida literature. His articles have appeared in The Miami Herald, The Orlando Sentinel, The Washington Post, and The Florida Historical Quarterly.
Funding for this Florida Talks program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
