Charlotte Walker, a London veterinarian in her 20s, journeys to Tuga on a fellowship to study endangered tortoises. It’s a fictional tropical British isle in the South Atlantic, where residents are all entangled in each other’s business--not exactly a paradise, but it has its enchantments. Founded on “the principles of compassionate collectivism,” the community is mainly descendants of refugees who fled “murderous European colonialism” over the centuries. Limited copies available.
